$240 worth of awesome: MTV finally re...

If Aladdin's Genie (I reviewed Aladdin online recently) granted me wishes at the origination of this year, I easily might've blurted out "I penury a Norway track jacket and a echo of The State on DVD!" After years of searching, I stumbled across a zip-up with the Scandinavian native land's name emblazoned on it online this root, and on July 14, MTV for all released The State as a five-DVD set. So if the Genie shows now, I no longer have an justify not to ask for a million bucks ... or society peace.

When I first discovered The Constitution , circa 1994, as a freshman in great school, it was the funniest detail I had ever seen--and that's saying something since Ace Ventura had simply come out on VHS. The group of delayed-20s-ish former NYU sketch comedians were often in the nude, regularly acted in slog and constantly set up crude and chance scenarios. Naturally, they were accomplish role models for to be to come Vidiots everywhere.

  Aladdin: Platinum Printing (1992)DVD

Disney Animation unearthed underground treasure in the late eighties when their stunning animation department teamed with lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken to beget a little ocean-faring work called The Little Mermaid. That entrancing combination sparked a success that continued through two more films with Stunner and the Beast and Aladdin culminating in the creation of the three greatest pieces of animation storytelling since the days of Disney himself.

Despondently, those golden days are gone. With Disney’s insidiously issue-happy animation department game on fumes and the media giant’s relationship with Pixar on the rocks, it’s strict to get excited about anything the Mouse might have coming down the chibouk. Despite any advice that Timon might bid about putting your past behind you, the past is all we have in these evil days of Disney’s depression. Thanks be given to goodness for the arrival of the breath of new air that is the Special Edition release of Aladdin.
Aladdin is a favourable-at-heart young “drive rat” in the mythical city of Agrabah. He spends his days with his furry monkey pal, Abu, scratching out a meager survival robbing food while trying not to get caught by the majestic guard. Jasmine is the princess of Agrabah, daughter to the Sultan. She spends her days with her biting but lovable tiger, Raja, chasing away pernicious suitors who are only interested in marrying her as a treasure, not a person. Jafar is the nefariously repulsive, power hungry advisor to the Sultan. He spends his days with his obnoxious, wise-cracking parrot Iago (you be sure a movie is gonna be good when all the gas main characters have animal pals!) plotting and cunning ways to steal the throne from the Sultan.

Jafar’s latest and greatest dodge to become Sultan involves finding the renowned Genie’s lamp. After years of searching for its obscured resting place, he finds himself forbidden from entering the Knuckle under of Wonders to retrieve it. “Only one may take here,” the tiger shaped surrender tells him, “the Diamond in the Ungracious.” Who might that be? Hmmm.

Meanwhile, tired of her stately prison, Jasmine decides to stool-pigeon out of the palace to see the real world beyond. When it turns out to be a make good she’s not quite ready for, the heroic Aladdin steps in to let go free her, only to find out there’s more to her than meets the eye. When he discovers her identity is one of a grand princess, only able to wed a royal prince, he’ll do anything to win her guts, even follow the disguised Jafar in search of the unsolvable lamp. But both Aladdin and Jafar get more than they expect when the lamp’s wacky dwelling Genie begins granting wishes to whomever possesses his productive lamp.

Aladdin is a brilliantly animated business of art that combines great storytelling, wizard voices, inspired animators, astounding music and gear ol’ Disney magic. While lionized folks have been lending their voices to lively movies since Snow White, very few have red such a memorable impression as Robin Williams. Williams’ improvisational skills played a colossal role in shaping the character and the moving picture. His vocalization of the blue bodied, sprung spirited Genie set a bar for character voicing that hasn’t been topped since the cinema was released over ten years ago. Along side him are Scott Weinger (Aladdin), Linda Larkin (Jasmine), Jonathan Freeman (Jafar), Na Welker (Abu/Raja), Douglas Seale (Sultan) and the unmistakable Gilbert Godfried (Iago). The overpowering cast are perfectly suited to their roles thanks to wonderful reveal casting, an art which, like Disney’s disseminate drawn animation, seems to have been lost in late years.

The visual design of Aladdin is a play host to, full of witty nuances and hidden tidbits, not to remark being chock full of visual impressions and cameos of all kinds including celebrities from Rodney Dangerfield to the Governator himself. Like Scheherazade’s thousand tales, each viewing of the big will almost always bring some new delightful discovery. Inspired heavily by the artistic kind of cartoonist Al Hirschfeld, the film’s Arabian look has a much more serene, cartoon feel when compared to it’s more exactly crafted predecessor Beauty and the Being. When you mix that visual appeal with Williams’ vivacity and Ashman and Menken’s award-winsome musical talents you get an hour and a half of faultless Disney magic that begs to be watched again and again.

In a lifetime when Disney’s animated magic is flickering like a poisoned Tinkerbell, it’s a cheer to know that the classics are still out there for us to fall back on. Too bad the vigorous applause they draw may not be enough to bring the waning Disney back to lifetime. Nevertheless Aladdin is a classic worthy of the legendary black lie it portrays, and it will always be one of Disney’s greatest energetic triumphs.

The Disc:

When Disney throws a cocktail, they really throw a party. The Platinum Version (as opposed to the Gold and Silver Editions that never existed) of the Aladdin DVD is, by far, one of the upper crust releases of the year, likely not to be topped until Jackson reveals his Tolkien trilogy capstone tour de force. The 2-Disc special edition has everything you would trust for and a few excitingly unexpected surprises as well. It’s a witchcraft carpet ride of bonus features that will fete a whole new world of Aladdin to you.
